Tim Elko named to SEC Baseball’s 2020 Community Service Team

Monday was supposed to be selection day for the 2020 NCAA Baseball Tournament, as well as the day after the Southeastern Conference tournament.

Instead, it was another day where scheduled sporting events did not take place, but Ole Miss and Tim Elko did pick up a postseason honor.

Despite a shortened baseball season, the SEC announced its 2020 Community Service Team on Monday, featuring Elko for his efforts in the Oxford and Lafayette County communities.

The conference names a Community Service Team for each of its 21 sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community through superior service.

Elko’s junior campaign was off to a solid start, playing in 14 games and starting 12 of 11 games in right field and once at first base. The Lutz, Fla. native had set a new career mark, hitting .354 with four doubles and had the Rebels’ lone triple of the short season. He drove in 15 runs and scored 12 along with three home runs.

The season off the field was what helped Elko earn the Community Service honor. He participated in the Adopt-A-Basket program to provide food to the Oxford community during Thanksgiving. Elko also supported the Ole Miss Special Olympics team during the Unified Egg Bowl event and read to local elementary school students during Reading with the Rebels and instructed children during the Bats and Balls Camp with the Junior Auxiliary.

Elko also participated in this year’s Night to Shine, celebrating 125 guests with special needs during a prom night experience earlier this year.
