Lafayette County reports six new COVID-19 cases since Monday

Lafayette County reached the century mark in reported COVID-19 cases on Monday, and has since gradually increased that number throughout the week.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported one new case in Lafayette County on Friday, bringing the county’s total to 107 presumptive cases and six new cases since Monday. Lafayette also has three COVID-19 deaths and 37 cases in long-term care facilities since March 19.

While the County’s total case number is growing, the number of active case numbers is not as high. According to data provided by the City of Oxford on their website, Lafayette County has 15 active cases as of May 13, not including Friday’s new case. Oxford’s emergency management director Jimmy Allgood said he is determining active case numbers by rolling off cases 14 days after they are reported by MSDH. The LTC cases are not included, since those individuals are not part of the general population.

MSDH reported 318 new cases statewide on Friday, bringing Mississippi’s total to 10,483 cases since March 11. The state also reported 13 new deaths, with two of them occurring between May 4 and 5, for a total of 480 COVID-19 related deaths.

There are 410 Mississippians hospitalized as of May 13, and 72 of those are on ventilators, according to MSDH. The most affected age group in Mississippi continues to be the 60-69 group with 404 hospitalized cases as of May 13.

An updated number of presumed recoveries has not been provided by MSDH. The number still sits at 6,268 cases that are presumed to have recovered from the novel coronavirus in Mississippi.
