Volunteer Oxford to close

Volunteer Oxford, a community volunteer center founded in 2011, has announced it will be closing its doors.

Volunteer Generation Funds were not awarded to Volunteer Mississippi, the statewide organization that supported the Oxford branch, for the next three years. Volunteer Oxford will close on October 31, 2017.

“Our mission is to develop, promote and support volunteerism in the Lafayette-Oxford-University community,” Volunteer Oxford director Teresa Faust said in a statement. “If we can even continue doing that in some small capacity, our community will still benefit in the long run.”

Over the past six years, Volunteer Oxford participated in such community activities as the National Days of Service on both Martin Luther King Day and Sept. 11 and finding volunteers for local nonprofits.

Volunteer Oxford was under the umbrella of the Oxford Park Commission. Director Seth Gaines said OPC is disappointed the volunteer organization is closing.

“We are extremely disappointed that Volunteer Mississippi did not receive funds to continue the partnership between Volunteer Oxford, Volunteer Mississippi, University of Mississippi, Lafayette County, and the city of Oxford,” he said. “At the end of the grant cycle which is Oct. 31, there will no longer be a Volunteer Oxford housed under the Oxford Park Commission or the city of Oxford.”
